In a small Williamsburg club called Baby’s All Right, a crowd gathered to see what Kimbra’s Space Jam was all about. She introduced the event as something to help her get her creative juices flowing and essentially we were all apart of an intimate jam session with Kimbra, her band and a few friends. “We’re all artists really, but we need spaces where we can feel safe to experiment and create.”
The room quickly filled with a cacophony of key Kimbra sounds, with hard hitting beats that brought out Kimbra’s mean mug as well as her melodic voice that accompanied her brilliant smile. She laughed as she quickly scrolled through several sound ideas that she had collected, “This is what my brain sounds like”.
Space Jam truly was nothing short of an intergalactic experience. Kimbra has a way of transforming the stage and transporting the audience to another dimension. She is not just a performer, though she does captivate everyone in the room, but she truly is an artist.
She invited some friends up on stage, including Empress Of, a musician that toured with Kimbra last fall.
The night really elevated when she was joined by Ben Wendel and Sammy Bananas, two musicians who brought their saxophones for the evening. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Kimbra and saxophones, but the experience was nothing short of a Space Odyssey. A monolith could have hovered down from the ceiling and it wouldn’t have felt out of place. The sounds melded together in such a hypnotizing, haunted kind of music that only Kimbra can invoke.
She said she’s planning to host another Space Jam in the next month or so. If you want to travel with Kimbra to another galaxy, keep it in mind! I know I will.
