I met Dadu last year in Brooklyn at a portfolio review. I think I can truthfully say that Dadu is one of the most enjoyable people to be around. He makes everyone feel comfortable and good about themselves. How often can you say that about a portfolio reviewer?
The images that he creates are subtle yet striking and captivating. I think it is said best, “He likes making pictures, looking at pictures and thinking about pictures”, and I would say that he’s very good at it.
What is a joyous moment that you’ve experienced recently?
I had Korean BBQ recently, anytime I have Korean BBQ I am overjoyed.
Why did you start illustration?
I always liked drawing, honestly it’s the only thing I’m any good at. From an early age I knew I wanted to go into a creative field. I went into art school thinking I would go into concept art for games and movies, but in the latter parts of my education I was shown artists like Shout, James Jean, and Chris Buzelli. I really like the visual metaphors they played with in their work and soon discovered what they were doing was called editorial illustration. The work I saw really varied in tone, execution and look, and I was drawn to the idea of variety. I really like how illustration allows for a creator to really put themselves in their work. There is a feeling of freedom when your work feels like yourself.
What have you learned from being an illustrator?
To communicate and understand ideas, emotions, and thoughts through visuals.
Did you have to give anything up to pursue illustration?
Besides having a job with benefits and financial security, I don’t think I’ve given up much to pursue being an illustrator. I’m grateful I get to do this for a living.
Besides this, what is another hidden talent, passion, or hobby of yours?
Drawing really is the only thing I excel at. I do have a talent for picking perfectly ripe avocados though.
Animal I Would Want to Be Most: Any animal that can fly, I think about flying at least once a day.
Morning Routine: Breakfast, emails, maybe second breakfast, head to studio.
Last Great Book I Read: Brain on Fire
Favorite TV Shows: Breaking Bad
Favorite Drink: H20, water is the best.
My Dream Collaboration: I’d actually love to do some textile prints for fashion.
Favorite Comedians: Dave Chapelle. If I run out of things to listen to I just put some of his stand up on and I’m set for at least a few hours. He can be goofy on stage, but he is incredibly smart.
If you could tell everyone in the world something, what would it be?
Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.
