The burgeoning collaboration between legendary East Coast producer DJ Premier and veteran Detroit-bred emcee Royce da 5’9” – PRhyme – resonates as both a head-nodding call to classic hip hop action as well as a raw response to the short attention span hip-pop audiences of today.
“Right now, everybody seems like they are programmed to listen to singles and gravitate towards the popular songs,” Royce da 5’9” explains the thinking that led to PRhyme. “Our thing is to teach people how to not skim through the albums because their attention span is short. I want people to appreciate the fact that we didn’t compromise in lieu of the environment. In order to try to change the way that people digest music, we had to take a leap of faith.”
PRhyme’s self-titled late 2014 release effortlessly blends Premier’s seminal beats and production – built entirely from the original music of multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Adrian Younge – with Royce’s passionate, noticeably matured style and substance to create an album both old and new, maybe even timeless. Just like a true hip- hop album should sound.
“It’s not, like, five different producers with five different scattered sounds; it’s one cohesive sound, and it’s raw hip-hop — beats, rhymes and scratches, content and lyrics,” Royce told Billboard. “That’s the foundation of hip-hop. I can’t wait to see how much more we do and how much further we go with it.”
PRhyme with Adrian Younge will perform on July 30th with Bishop Nehru supporting. Best of Utah DJ of the year, J Godinawill open the evening.
