Paul Vincent Bernard is an artist from Salt Lake City, Ut with quick wit and a sense of humor to accompany his gorgeous abstract minimalist art works. Paul will be exhibiting his work this weekend with his professor, Bob Kleinschmidt, another artist from Salt Lake. We wanted to learn more about Paul in anticipation for his upcoming show.
Why did you start this venture? Out of opportunity, necessity, dream job…?
Ventures, opportunity, dream job…you stop dreaming and are grateful to wake up the next day, back aches, legs ache, can’t remember the names of dear friends. Alas, what has been given up….youth? It all reminds me of the new Sorrentino film I had the privilege of watching in Italy last week. What is given up, what is the cost, perhaps more than the reward, that is the life of an artist.
Hidden talents and interests?
Fishing, gardening, grandchildren, anything to be less self centered as an artist, anything to realize that it is not always about me and the next image.
Close to my family?
I have been working a daytime job in a family business since 1969. Obligations, responsibilities that have no part of the capitalist system and grabbing more more than is deserved.
What animal would I want to be most?
What kind of a question is that? More human, more humane, less ridiculous.
Morning routine?
Does the FBI want to know? They have the tapes I am sure.
Dream tattoos?
I have had a lot of dreams, some of them extremely bizarre, interesting and suggestive but they have never involved a tattoo. Tattoos are…well I wear enough insecurity on my shoulder. I don’t have to broadcast it in really bad colors.
Last great book I read?
I am drawn to mid-century poets from the 20th century, that and Derrida and Barthes.
I do believe that my answers reveal much about who I am. A smart ass perhaps. I know that I have been sarcastic and whatever about these questions but I still have a sense of wonder about life, I believe in the beauty of silent places and I have no regrets. Everyone should be happy and find love somewhere in life, even in the midst of the insanity that is.
Paul’s art will be a part of the Sugar House Art Walk this Friday at the The Green Loft, which is located at 2834 S. Highland Drive. The event will be June 12, 2015 from 6:00-9:00 PM.
