XXL-Freshmen-2014As one of the 12 apostles of XXL’s 2014 freshmen class, Vic Mensa has a lot to prove.  His 2013 release Innanetape scored him a VIP spot in this group, next to Chance The Rapper and Ty Dolla $ign but it also means he’s got some big shoes to fill.  Vic now belongs to the hall of previous freshmen like Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Macklemore, Action Bronson, Lupe Fiasco, Schoolboy Q, Joey Bada$$ and Big K.R.I.T. (to name just a few).  You want to know where the future of Hip-Hop lies?  A big portion of it sits in this fraternity, and every May we get an introduction into the new batch of pledges.

Off the heals of XXL’s annoucement, Vic Mensa dropped a new music video for his latest song, Down On My Luck. About the song, Renato Pagnani of Pitchfork writes:

“The Chicago rapper makes great use of his nimble mercury-slicked flow on “Down on My Luck”, removing the spaces between words so that they tumble into each other like dominoes, but with its soft neon fog and translucent chords, the song could’ve slotted onto the back half of last year’s breakout debut from Disclosure—without raising any eyebrows.”

The video brilliantly uses the repeating intro as a vehicle to transform a typical night at the club into a choose-your-own-adventure of sorts.  I had no idea so much shit could go wrong during one night out. . . guess that’s what happens when you’re down on your luck.
